Hermosa Beach, CA – The Hermosa Beach Soccer Club (www.HermosaBeachSoccerClub.com)
announced today the results of the L.A. Watts Summer
Games Boys and Girls Soccer Tournaments. The 41st
annual L.A. Watts Summer Games are hosted by the Los
Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce (www.LAJCC.org) and
were presented by Chivas
USA
(www.cdchivasusa.com) and coordinated and supported by
volunteers from the Hermosa Beach Soccer Club. The
Games were played on June 7, 8 and 14, 2008.
The
two-weekend long soccer tournament, played at the
Columbia Park Soccer Complex in Torrance, CA, included
32 boys high school teams and 20 girls high school
teams. Teams competed during the opening weekend in a
three-game round robin competition, with bracket leaders
moving to the playoff rounds.
“The
Hermosa Beach Soccer Club is proud of its continued
involvement with the L.A. Watts Summer Games. For over
40 years the Games have played a significant role in
building bridges of understanding among our local
youth,” said Jesse Torres, HBSC Club Founder. “My pride
in the Games comes not only from my involvement as a
volunteer but also my experiences many years ago as a
player in this tournament. Despite my many successes on
the soccer field over the years, my memories of this
special event rank at the top. It is the reason I chose
to dedicate our Club to serving the needs of the Games
and the LAJCC.”
“This
is the Club’s fifth year coordinating and supporting the
Games’ boys and girls soccer tournaments - and every
year it has gotten better,” said Brian Dragich, HBSC
President. “What was especially rewarding for everyone
was Chivas USA’s leadership as title sponsor. Apart
from Chivas USA’s substantial financial support, the
Games received considerable back office assistance.
Chivas USA is a true community leader.”
The
2008 L.A. Watts Summer Games Boys Soccer Tournament
winner was Animo High School (Inglewood, CA) which
defeated Loyola High School (Los Angeles, CA) 2 -1 in
the tournament final. Sylmar High School’s girls’
soccer team defeated Royal High School (Simi Valley, CA)
2-1.
