HERMOSA BEACH SOCCER CLUB OUT OF SEMI-FINAL ON GOAL DIFFERENTIAL

June 5, 2008

Hermosa Beach, CA – The Hermosa Beach Soccer Club’s (www.HermosaBeachSoccerClub.com) Men’s Over-30 team finished tied for second place in group play of the South Bay Peninsula Soccer League’s Division 30 post-season tournament, but failed to advance to the semi-final round due to a one-point goal differential.

After clinching the League title with a 15-4-3 record, HBSC entered the post-season tournament with high hopes of taking home the Champion’s Tournament trophy. HBSC finished tournament group-play with a 4-2-0 record and a tie for second place in its group. The Hermosa Beach Soccer Club failed to advance to the semi-final match, however, when it fell one goal short in the goal differential calculation.

“This was definitely not the way we envisioned ending the season. Our team dominated league play from September through April. We clinched the League title with a month left in the regular season and we were excited about winning the League title and tournament trophy in the same season…a feat we have yet to accomplish,” said Jesse Torres, Club Founder and Division 30 player. “To fall short due to a one point difference in goal differential leaves you thinking about those easy goals we gave up in tournament matches where we were winning big. It is a lesson for our entire team not to take any tournament match lightly and that every point matters.”

“It was an unfortunate ending to a great season. Our over-30s scored 93 goals during the regular 22-game season and 23 goals in their six tournament games,” said Brian Dragich, HBSC President. “I would have never guessed that goal differential would have been their spoiler. I feel for our lads. Though they had a great year.”

As the Hermosa Beach Soccer Club enters the summer break, team managers encourage skilled players interested in joining the Hermosa Beach Soccer Club to contact the appropriate team manager: League play resumes in September 2008 and runs through May 2009.
